The Helle Nying is maybe our most classic Helle knife. Short and stubby, and with a distinct design like no other. Some consider it to be ugly, but for the many who use it is a loved tool for long carving sessions by the campfire.

The Helle Nying has been awarded for its unique and classic design, just as much as it has been rejected by many. Still it is one of our true, long term friends to bring on the belt. Proudly in production at Helle since 1977 and made in more than 1 million copies, which is a lot for a small factory like Helle.

The handle is generously proportioned to give a good grip and control over the blade. A slight fingerguard to guide your hand to a safe handle position, even if held close to the blade. This is a knife used for quality time and carving.

Nying comes in an attractive leather sheath that has a design cutout with the resemblance of fire flames. Fitted with a keeper strap that engages on the stud on the knife pommel. A suspension strap of leather keeps it dangling on your belt Norwegian style.

My favorite belt knife

I purchased the Nying around 2003 for an incredible $29.99 new, and I have used it by carving by the fireplace for years and it became my most used knife. The handle was at first slightly odd to me but I quickly learned to use it and it’s very comfortable to use now. The sheath is perfect, I love dangler style sheaths. I think the only improvements I would suggest is mainly a laminated carbon steel blade like the Viking, as long as you keep it thin like the original Nying, and maybe a slightly sharper point-i like the older style blades that had a sharper point and swedge ground on the back. The Nying I have had a very uneven grind and I have seen this with a lot of this model and others but it’s not a huge issue and I don’t even notice it in use. This is the knife that I carry in my shoulder bag and would carry as my bushcraft knife always. I would certainly buy a carbon steel version though, and I just purchased an older used version for my wife-this one has a prettier birch grip (mine is as plain as it gets) and hers has the sharper point and slightly thinner grip of the older ones. I might have to use hers and see if I like the older version enough to get another one for myself! If you’re looking for a great small knife, you really can’t go wrong with the Nying, it really comes as close to perfect as I have seen!

Love this ugly little knife

I kept looking at this knife and watching reviews online…
It’s my fidget knife that lives on one of my bike packing bikes. It has come in handy so many times. If you like to whittle on stick while taking in the atmosphere of a camp setting this is the perfect little knife.
Handle just feels natural it has plenty of handmade mojo.

Great Knife

The shorter blade and large handle make for a great whittling knife that is easy on the wrist.
