Helle Speider is a great starting knife for those who want a solid knife with good protection.
Speider was originally designed for older scouts who had enough experience to move on to a larger and more powerful knife. The handle in dark, oiled birch is ergonomically adapted to a good four-finger grip, and the solid fingerguard provides good protection when working with the knife. The blade is in 12C27 stainless steel with a thin, Scandinavian grind and comes razor sharp out of the sheath.
Scout is delivered with a scout green sheath in leather with push button and belt suspension.

Open hereI just really like the craftsmanship into making Helle knives.
This knife is a work of art. The steel is amazing, the sheath is beautiful. My Brother gave me The Viking a few years back. It is on my belt all fall. We are proud Norwegian Americans, our Grandfather came to Northern Minnesota in 1910…homesteaders on the Rainy River. We know where our roots are and this knife just brings me that much closer.
I bought the Speider for several reasons. I determined that a good way to judge the quality of Helle Norway knives was to purchase one of the base products. So #2 was that it was of course not expensive. #3 was that I like to carry a fixed blade knife on my wading belt when trout fishing. It is so handy. But here’s the “but”, I think that the belt loop on the sheath is so flimsy and the fact that it dangles from
my belt thar it could tear off if hung up on a tree branch or some other obstruction when I bushwhack off of a fisherman’s trail to enter a trout stream at one of my “secret” spots.
The knife that the Speider is replacing was probably lost when a branch or whatever hung up on the wrist lanyard. I won’t employ one of those again.
We shall see. I’ll report back. I’ll probably use Duck tape to secure the sheat to my wading belt.
The knife is very well made and sharp, easy to handle; it's a tool that will last a lifetime. Well worth the price!
I bought 4 of these knives as gifts for my brothers and despite them being on the lower end of the price range for Helle knives they were still up to the great quality I’ve come to expect from Helle, the knives were beautiful, sharp, and unique. My brothers all loved them.
